animatic write-up

This is my animatic for the proposal piece that I'm working on. Now when I look back on this piece I see a lot of problems coming out. It's still not clear about being slow and controlled so I will need to beef that aspect up. Also, I noticed that some of my story is not really integrated.

Background

In my next project, I want to animate these characters above doing three different challenges/ workouts that will favor the turtle more that the rabbit. In this animation I will be portraying how taking ones time, being consistent, and in control is more beneficial than just pushing heavy iron. In this dual, I have created stages of development for both characters that will take place at different times in the piece to express the growth and mass build up, after every workout/challenge. I do plan on having animated text moving through the background so that it's not too static, but enough to keep the piece interesting. This piece is about rhythm, control, and growth. I hope that the use of text will help with the kind of energy that I'm hoping to achieve. I do want the back ground really minimal and close to static because I don't want to loose the characters in all the text.

Critique Follow-Up

In response to the statements in class, I learned that I should really try and come up with a list of metaphors that I can choose from so I'll have something more broad to work with. I think that there may be a way to incorporate some kind of text into this next project and I feel that it may actually change the piece and take it into another direction. I also learned that I should really push the idea of muscle and growth and how it relates to my metaphors.

To better explain my project I'm wanting basically play around with the idea of slow vs. fast. The main character, Mr. Turtle will be my vessel for depicting my idea. What I tried to do in class was come up of some kind of illustration of different ways I could possibly create my aesthetic. I want to basically show how be patient and taking time can cause more results.

Assignment write-up (masks)

In this project I really tried to break away from the normal weight-lifting aesthetic. So, I chose a word that goes along with weight lifting and then basically came up of another way to portray that word. I chose "resistance," so in this project I have basically made an ant and a frog basically tug "o" war against one another to portray and kind of resistance happens in weight lifting. Back and forth up and down. I choose the ant because they have the ability to lift 10 times their weight and I wanted to express that. The frog was chosen because they come in all shapes and sizes and I know that the frog will be a total resistance. Sort of like trying to tug o war a tracker.

About the masks, I didn't really take advantage off them so much because my piece is only fifteen seconds and the action starts immediately. Honestly I didn't think they would add or take away. However, I did use masks in some areas.

Project Post

For this project I extracted a dialogue from the movie 300, which I thought had a lot of energy and surprises in the voices and momentums. I think that for a first project I know that this piece could be pushed more visually, but I really wanted to think about the text reacting towards the other. Now that I look back on my project, I know that I should have created the text to be able to stand on it's on and I know now it is more dependent on the sound.

Assignment write-up (Paper)

Topography

Paula Scher

Scher is an American graphic designer and artist. Paula Scher studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C, where is first achieve a BFA and Doctor of Fine Arts. After college she began working doing album covers for CBS Records and Atlantic Records that later moved her into working for Art Direction Magazine. Paula has been awarded many medals and achievements in her time and Grammy Award nominations. She has hurdled many milestones in her life that decorate her nicely, but lets look into her work and how she uses typography or letterforms to create a work of art.

Paula Scher’s latest works consist of maps that maximize the use of letterforms and color. In one of her painting she has India colored with bright vibrant colors contrast to the letterforms that are for the most part in the same color scheme in the totality of the painting. She uses the names and letters in different sizes and rhythms that give the painting energy and an idea repetitious source that flows.

The flowing letterforms creates a painting that becomes significant because she has mastered the use of text in such a way that text consumes the viewer and aesthetically pulls the viewers eyes into the work. Her paintings are overwhelming in the sense that she uses accents and bold letter type strategically that in the context of Dynamic Imaging, will be used to express art in ways that provides a kind of momentum that typography illustrates differently than actual rendered objects and spaces. Her letterforms provide different sizes, rhythm, repetition, speed, weight and color. In our class we will need to make the best of these characteristics to create a work that stands alone and actually speaks for itself.

In closing I am really compelled and inspired by Paula’s work because she has provided an avenue and aesthetic that I want to explore. She has on youtube a video where she experiments with alphabets and text that overlaps and how it changes its sounds. That idea is really compelling for my project, because I can experiment with how the letterforms will create sounds and shapes. I think that Paula’s work is exciting and interesting to try to almost try to visualize in my own artwork.  Paula Scher is a wonderful artist and her work has left an impact on me.

Assignment write-up

I went back and really tried to resolve the issues in my big project. I did not break apart everything, but I did tried to free some of my shots from just total stillness. I've learned that I really need to plan out every moveable object ahead of time in the designing stage so that the animation becomes more jazzy or full of life. I think for a first project I've really tried to utilize everything within after effects, that I know, to push my project and make up for the design mistakes in the very beginning.

As for the class assignment I wanted to line up the music more with the actions going on within the stage. I think that by doing that the piece has become more lively and not robotic. The project wasn't too hard to complete and I can't wait to see all the projects together.

assignment write-up

I had a bit of trouble completing this project but I found out why. I think that my project for the most part will speak for itself when I put everything together. All I could really work with was the camera, so I have a pretty good understanding of how the camera works and what it will and will not do. I found myself adding and subtracting a lot of material because I didn't want to take away from the characters. My intentions for the piece was for the animals to portray my sentence without actually having to display it. I'm trying to see if my visuals are pushed enough without me having to give some sort of help but critique may think otherwise.

assignment write-up

This week we had to start finish one of the scenes for class and mine basically is the opening shot of the whole story. I tried to play with the animals and their motions. I also tried to get a head start on everything else, but shots aren't available for viewing at this time. Heres what I did.

Assignment write-up

These are my composite of images.

This assignment wasn't too hard to complete. However, it was a tedious and time consuming. I wanted to portray my sentence with animals. I chose a gorilla and a donkey because I figured it would be funny to see them together. I was pushing for a more comedic approach to this assignment and I hope it comes across clear. I had trouble incorporating the other outside material like fabric, because I could figure out how to place them in another pdf. So, we'll see how critique goes.

Proposal:

I want to concern myself with the idea of muscle and physical fitness. We are now at a time where self image is extremely important to maintain. There are ideals that many minds aspire to and try very hard to achieve. In doing so, they actually maintain a sense of acceptance within their environment or social circle. My idea is to specifically target muscle and physical fitness in a way that metaphorically comments on idealism, self-esteem, and acceptance. I am still interested in basic forms and movements, and I am also interested in the idea of creating a work-out exercise plan that builds on from project to project.

My interest in proper muscle development and nutrition is because of personal goals for myself that, actually in a way, may lead me to really personalize this project later. My experiences with weight-lifting wasn't a very productive gain and I want learn why it was not. I feel that this topic will provide a bridge for the gap between nutrition and good muscle fitness, but to also help me describe where I really stand as far as idealism, self-esteem, and acceptance.

First Assignment- Free write exercise

This summer I did a bit of traveling back and forth airport to airport. I remember walking extremely fast down terminals to catch flights that seemed like a journey to get to. I also did a lot of hanging out in tourist hot spots in Virginia and California which were really interesting as far as the beach and weather, family, and food were concerned. I never was able to get a job this summer, but I did manage to do a logo on the window of Lenny's sub shop off of Highland st across the street from U of Memphis before the summer even started. That was pretty fun considering that we did it in approximately 30 hours almost non- stop. My brother and I also exercised a lot this summer. We were back and forth almost every monday, wednesday, and friday. Working the bench press then curls then whatever else we could squeeze out of our tired muscles. I spent a lot of catch up time with my family this summer, earning my place back into their lives, since we have been apart for so long. This summer I also practiced a lot with music. I have a drum set out in Virginia (VA) and I found it difficult to take what I know and apply it to actual drum beats. What I mean is that I have a lot of technical exercises that should be applied into music.

PHASE 2

In this free- write I realize that it has a kind of adventure to it. There are different instances of me talking about self improvement in terms of skills or family. I have a lot of traveling experience so I could maybe focus my attention to terminals or airports, planes, or traveling in general. Or maybe music in dealing with my drum set. Maybe music theory concerning the instrument and its connection to weight lifting.
